Hello World! It has been awhile since my last post. I missed ya. Hope you missed me too!
Life always has a way of taking me from some of the simple pleasures like blogging. In all honestly, the last month and a half has been very transforming in many ways. I have gone through a series of events that have given me a clearer picture of the journey ahead.
One of these events is the commitment to serve my Laotian community. I have been a facilitator and Program Director for the Lao Youth Leaders for the last few years. It has been a very rewarding volunteer position for me.
What I have realized in December was how fast the youth was growing. They were taking more initiatives and manifesting their leadership capabilities. It was an eye-opener for me because I didn’t expect them to grow so fast. It was another example of how children always seem to surprise me if you give them the resources and challenge them to grow.
I decided that I will raise the bar for the youth and this program. I wanted to see how much higher these kids can fly. This year will be a huge year for us. We have almost doubled the size of our class from last year as a result of the success of our programs reaching other children and their parents. I remind the prospective parents that this is not a “baby-sitter’s club” and that we expect 100% commitment from their children and themselves. And to my pleasant surprise, both agree to my terms and enroll in the program.
This year will be a challenge for me as I build a process and system to support a greater study body. It will also be a test for my “Senior” leaders of the group. I have challenged them to be leaders of the group and to help grow our programs. I am anxious to see how this works out. I am definitely optimistic on their future success.
(Teen Career Fair Organizers with Dr. Torres)
We just completed a successful event, Teen Career Fair, where successful professional gave testimonials on their success and offered advice to the youth. It was a rewarding event for all who came out and served. We had the honor of hosting Dr. Torres, Superintendent of School District U-46. He was very encouraged and excited to see the growth of the community.
The message for this year is about DREAMS. I have challenged the group to dream big. I know I am living a dream watching them grow!
